{"id":415,"date":"2018-11-20T15:24:49","date_gmt":"2018-11-20T15:24:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.sydhowarth.com\/?page_id=415"},"modified":"2019-05-10T13:33:08","modified_gmt":"2019-05-10T13:33:08","slug":"history","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.sydhowarth.com\/?page_id=415","title":{"rendered":"History"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-448\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sydhowarth.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/a-dedication-300x284.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"708\" height=\"670\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sydhowarth.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/a-dedication-300x284.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.sydhowarth.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/a-dedication-768x727.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.sydhowarth.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/a-dedication-1024x969.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.sydhowarth.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/a-dedication.jpg 1500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 708px) 100vw, 708px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In this section we would like to share the history of Syd&#8217;s life.<br \/>\nThe section will updated as and when information comes available:<\/p>\n<p><strong>SYD HOWARTH<\/strong> MBE<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Born on 21st October 1937, the eldest son of Dorothy and Sydney Howarth<\/li>\n<li>Second eldest of eleven brothers and sisters<\/li>\n<li>Lived in a small home, four kids in a bed<\/li>\n<li>One outside toilet and one coal fire<\/li>\n<li>Lived with grandparents (from age 6 to 11) to alieve crowding<\/li>\n<li>Grandparents ran a newsagents and general dealers<\/li>\n<li>Father was a guillotine operator<\/li>\n<li>Did well academically at school and was offered a Grammar School position<\/li>\n<li>Parents could not afford Grammar School, so attended a Secondary school<\/li>\n<li>Attended the local Anglican Church and sang in the choir<\/li>\n<li>Sang solo at many church concerts<\/li>\n<li>Started emplyment at 15 as an accountants assistant<\/li>\n<li>After 3 weeks was taken on as an Apprentice compositor<\/li>\n<li>Worked 5 days a week 7.30am to 5.30pm<\/li>\n<li>Attended college 3 nights a week from 7.30 to 9pm<\/li>\n<li>At the same time worked at a wholesale vegetable market 3 mornings a week from 4.30 to 6.30am<\/li>\n<li>Nights off spent at choir practice and other church events<\/li>\n<li>Took up piano lessons when voice broke<\/li>\n<li>Appeared on the Carol Levis Discovery Schow at Nottingham Empire<\/li>\n<li>Radar Operator for the RAF during National Service at RAF Boulmer<\/li>\n<li>Met future Wife Irene at Alnwick and married after serving in the RAF<\/li>\n<li>First job after NS was for a printer in Stowell Street, Newcastle<\/li>\n<li>Eldest son Paul was born in 1962<\/li>\n<li>Also worked for Morpeth Herald<\/li>\n<li>Was head hunted for the manager&#8217;s position with a new company in Newton Aycliffe<\/li>\n<li>Moved to Newton Aycliffe in 1963 and found the new company had gone bust<\/li>\n<li>Took over the order book and started Newton Press<\/li>\n<li>Started Newton Press at an office at the back of the bakery in Neville Parade<\/li>\n<li>Second son Stuart was born in 1965<\/li>\n<li>Moved to bigger premises in Greenwell Road (no homeplan)<\/li>\n<li>Took over printing and publisahing the Newton News (then called the Newtonian)<\/li>\n<li>Third son Christopher was born in 1969<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>LOCAL ACHIEVEMENTS<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Set up the town&#8217;s Rotary Club<\/li>\n<li>Organised the carving and erection of the memorial<\/li>\n<li>Helped establish the first town organisation, The Garden&#8217;s Guild<\/li>\n<li>Arranged the tidy up campaign for the Blue Bridge area<\/li>\n<li>Motivated the Rotary Club to erect a welcome sign next to the Blue Bridge<\/li>\n<li>Stirred up local activities to raise money for new MRI scanners at Darlington and Bishop Auckland<\/li>\n<li>Led the Newton Aycliffe Youth Centre to their new home next to the town park<\/li>\n<li>Chaired various committees and organisations in Newton Aycliffe<\/li>\n<li>Was Governor at several schools<\/li>\n<li>Fought many campaigns to raise funds, start projects and local charities<\/li>\n<li>Helped raise over \u00a3160,000 for West Africa projects (water, schools and hospitals)<\/li>\n<li>President of Woodham Community Centre<\/li>\n<li>President of Acorn Players<\/li>\n<li>Trustee of Newton Aycliffe Scouts Supporters Association<\/li>\n<li>Vice Chairman of the Sedgefield Business Forum<\/li>\n<li>Member of Greenfield Arts College Forum<\/li>\n<li>Member of Woodham Technology College Forum<\/li>\n<li>Member of the Committee of the Learning Town Partnership<\/li>\n<li>President of the Newton Aycliffe Action Group<\/li>\n<li>Founder of Great Aycliffe Community Aid Partnership<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In this section we would like to share the history of Syd&#8217;s life.
